“How are you mate?” I said to the young guy on the checkout
“Good and you?” He said.
“I’ve got to ask you. Are you still running out of toilet paper?”
4 weeks into our new world of self isolation I assumed the supplies would have returned to the shelves.
“Yep. We got a delivery in last night and it was all gone in half an hour this morning!”
“You are joking?”
“Nup. Half an hour.”
Stocks of flour and canned food weren’t much better.
Our modern lifestyle has led us to a life of ease and convenience.
It’s a long way from how research has shown our hunter gatherer ancestors used to eat 100,000’s of years ago.
Back then food was eaten when it was available. Vegetables, nuts, seeds, meat, fish, fowl and fruit rounded off their diet and we adapted an thrived on this.
But if we jump ahead to say 10,000 years ago, when the worlds populations were expanding at a rapid rate and regular and consistent food sources became more and more important and in order to survive grain products, such as wheat & rice were grown in large volumes.
This unfortunately saw the beginning of a decline in our general health as we saw a sudden decline in life expectancy around this time due to unhygienic living conditions and a move to grain based diet.
Fast forward to today, virtually every meal we eat s part of our modern diet is based on carbohydrate, whether it be grains (cereals, biscuits, chips, pasta or rice) or processed foods or sugar.
Living a life fueled by carbohydrate diet causes a number of things to happen within our bodies –
Our bloodstream is required to carry excessive amounts of glucose and
Our bodies are required to produce increased levels of insulin,
Our cells become more resistant to insulin and
Our bodies then tend to lock away fat stores making it difficult to use this as a source of energy.
This can result in weight gain, obesity, serious lifestyle illness and other diseases like heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.
Around 1.7 million Australians have diabetes. This includes all types of diagnosed diabetes (1.2 million known and registered) as well as silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes (up to 500,000 estimated).
The primal diet however varies greatly to our modern diet.
A focus on vegetables, meat, fish, fowl, nuts, seeds, fruit, coconut products does not over stimulate excessive insulin production in our bodies like a high carbohydrate diet does, and so our bodies become more sensitive to insulin and are then able to access and burn stored body fat for energy and reduce the risk of disease.
